Gear oil is a kind of oil, especially suitable for vehicles, trucks and various gearboxes, gearboxes and differential. The increased viscosity of the protective device is usually associated with a strong sulfur smell. Excessive viscosity ensures the transfer of lubricant throughout the gear movement. This is necessary because the device that requires this heavy oil will not have a pump to transport the oil, and only a portion of the bottom gear will be immersed in the tank. This heavy oil will produce viscous resistance, resulting in low car efficiency. Some modern computer drive Bridges (integrated gearboxes and differential units) do not use heavy oil at all, but are lubricated by using commercially available viscosity-hydraulic oil in computerized drives.
Most lubricants for manual transmission and differential are quasi – hyperboloid gear oil. These include overpressure (EP) additives and anti-wear additives to deal with the sliding motion of hypoid bevel gears.
Gear oil is marked with the American petroleum institute’s GL score. For example, most modern transmissions require GL4 oil, while individual differential (when installed) requires GL5 oil. It is necessary for the buyer to inspect the oil to ensure that it does not contain any corrosion of gear components, corrosive chemicals such as many Japanese cases used in phosphorous bronze.
The API viscosity grade of gear oil cannot be directly compared with the viscosity grade of oil, it is thinner than the digital recommendation. For example, many fashionable gearboxes use 75W90 gear oil, which actually has the same viscosity as 10W40 oil. Multistage gear oil is becoming more common. The gear oil did not reach the temperature of the engine oil, and when the car was driven, the gear oil increased significantly, mainly due to shear friction (a small amount of heat conduction from the engine cylinder).
Absolute synthetic gear oil is also used in many vehicles and has higher shear damage resistance than mineral oil. They will improve the “troublesome” gearboxes, some of which are very slippery and can stop synchronised movements.
The API grade of all gearbox oil is divided into 6 channels:
API gl-1, technical conditions for gasification of oil – light coal. They consist of non-additive base oils. They usually contain small amounts of antioxidant additives, corrosion inhibitors, detergents and anti-foam additives. API gl-1 lubricants are suitable for trucks and agricultural machinery with helical bevel gears, worm wheels and steering drives.
API gl-2, oil under average conditions. They contain anti-wear additives specially designed for worm wheels. Proper lubrication of tractors and agricultural gearboxes is recommended.
API gl-3, medium oil. It contains up to 2.7 percent anti-wear additives. Designed for lubrication of truck gearboxes and other gears. It’s not very useful for hyperboloid gears.
API gl-4 is suitable for all types of oils – mild to severe. They contain up to four zero-effect anti-reflection additives. Designed for axial displacement bevel gears and hypoid gears, truck gearboxes and shaft parts. Non-synchronous gearboxes for trucks, tractors and buses in the United States, as well as the main and other gears of all cars, are very useful. These oils are the basis of synchronous transmission, especially in Europe.
API gl-5, oil in bad conditions. They contain up to 6.5 percent effective anti-reflection additives. The total utility of this oil is a hypoid gear with important axial displacement. They are useful for all other mechanical transmission modes except gearboxes. This type of oil, specifically approved by the automaker, will be used separately for synchronous manual transmission. If the specification of mil-l-2105d or ZF te-ml-05 is met, API gl-5 oil will be used for limited slip differential. In this case, the class name might be another, such as API gl-5 + or API gl-5 LS.
API gl-6 is suitable for oil in very heavy environment (too fast sliding speed and large impact load). They contain up to 10 per cent of highly effective anti-reflection additives. They are designed for hypoid gears with important axial displacement. API gl-6 is not used because the gl-5 of the API is sufficient to meet the most extreme requirements.
