Gear oil is a kind of oil, especially suitable for vehicles, trucks and various kinds of gearboxes, gearboxes and differential. The increased viscosity of the protective gear is usually associated with a strong smell of sulphur. Excessive viscosity ensures the transfer of lubricant throughout the gear exercise. This is necessary because the device that needs this heavy oil will not have a pump for transferring oil, and only a portion of the bottom gear is immersed in the tank. This kind of heavy oil can produce viscous resistance, resulting in low efficiency of the car. Some modern computer drive Bridges (integrated gearboxes and differential) do not use heavy oil at all, but are lubricated by using a commercially available viscosity hydraulic oil in a computerized transmission.
Most of the lubricants used for manual transmission and differential are quasi-hyperboloid gear oils. These include overpressure (EP) additives and anti-wear additives to deal with the sliding motion of the hypoid bevel gear.
Gear oil is marked with the GL score by the American Petroleum Institute. For example, most modern gearboxes require GL4 oil, while a separate differential (where it is installed) requires GL5 oil. The buyer is necessary to check whether the oil is in violation of the provisions of the car manufacturers, to ensure that it does not contain any erosion of gear components, corrosive chemicals such as many Japanese box used in phosphor bronze.
The API viscosity grade of gear oil can not be directly compared with the viscosity grade of oil, and it is thinner than the digital recommendation. For example, many fashionable gear boxes use 75W90 gear oil, which in fact has the same viscosity as 10W40 oil. Multistage gear oil is becoming more and more common; The gear oil did not reach the temperature of the engine oil, and when the car was driven, the gear oil increased significantly, mainly due to shear friction (a small amount of heat conduction from the engine cylinder).
Absolute synthetic gear oil is also used in many vehicles and has a higher resistance to shear damage than mineral oils. They will improve the “troublesome” gearbox, some of which are extremely slippery and can block the speed of the synchronized movement.
API grade subdivision of all transmission oil to 6 courses:
API gl-1, oil light coal gasification technology conditions. They consist of a non-additive base oil. Usually they contain a small amount of antioxidant additives, corrosion inhibitors, detergents and anti-foam additives. API gl-1 lubricating oil is suitable for truck and agricultural machinery with helical bevel gear, worm wheel and guide drive.
API gl-2, oil under average conditions. They contain anti-wear additives designed for worm gear. Advise on proper lubrication of tractor and farm gearbox.
API gl-3, medium oil. It contains up to 2.7% anti-wear additives. Designed for the lubrication of the truck gearbox and other gears. It’s not very useful for a hyperboloid gear.
API gl-4 for various situations of oil – mild to severe. They contain up to four zero-efficiency anti-reflective additives. Designed for axial displacement small helical gear and hypoid gear, truck gearbox and shaft parts. The non-synchronous gearboxes for American trucks, tractors and buses, and the main gears and other gears of all cars, are very helpful. These oils are the basis for synchronous transmission, especially in Europe.
API gl-5, oil under harsh conditions. They include effective anti-reflective additives up to 6.5%. The total utility of such oil is a hypoid gear with an important axis displacement. They are very useful for all other mechanical transmission modes except the gearbox. This category of oil, specially approved by the automaker, will be used separately for the synchronous manual transmission. If the requirements of the mil-l-2105d or ZF te-ml-05 specification are met, the API gl-5 oil will be used for the limited slip differential. In this case, the name of the class might be another, such as an API gl-5 + or API gl-5 LS.
API gl-6 is suitable for oil in very heavy environment (slide speed is too fast, impact load is large). They contain up to 10 per cent high efficiency anti-reflective additives. They are designed for hypoid gears with important axes displacement. The API gl-6 is just not used, because the API’s gl-5 is good enough to satisfy the most extreme requirements.
