Statewide, online, non-degree, competency-based. That’s a good idea?
California’s legislature is considering a proposal by Jerry Brown to establish a new online community college in 114 countries with two-year institutions. The broad plan has drawn the cautious optimism of many observers, though some details have yet to emerge and the impact of the new institutional approach is still difficult to predict.
The architects of the proposal acknowledge that the new agency itself does not solve the country’s myriad problems: the ripple effects of budget cuts during the recession have prevented 600, 000 californians from entering school. The population has grown enormously in the past decade; The prospect of automation is revolutionising the job market.
The goal of the new agency is to create a new option, perhaps the first of many adults to want to enter the labor market or relocate in this market.
