How to make the best of ai happen to us?
Many of the leading artificial intelligence researchers think that in a few years, artificial intelligence will not only can finish some of our work, but also can finish all our work, forever changing the life on the earth.
Many people think that science fiction is because we have traditionally believed that intelligence is a mysterious thing that can only exist in organisms, especially humans. But such chauvinism is unscientific.
From my perspective as a physicist and AI researchers, intelligence is just a basic particle movement of some kind of information processing, there is no physical laws say we can’t build machine more intelligent than us in each aspect. This means that we only see the intelligence on the tip of the iceberg, and have a great potential to open all hidden in the nature of intelligence, and use it to help human prosperity – or rather the flounder.
If we did the right thing, then the benefit is huge: because we love the civilization is the product of wisdom, with wisdom to expand our own wisdom so it is possible to solve the most troublesome problem tomorrow. For example, why do our loved ones die from driving in traffic accidents that might prevent or succumb to artificial intelligence that might help us find a cure for cancer? Why not increase productivity and prosperity through automation, and use artificial intelligence to accelerate research and development of sustainable energy that we can afford?
As long as we win the power of the technology is growing and we manage it between the wisdom of the competition, I’m optimistic that as long as we can win the advanced artificial intelligence, but this need to abandon our old strategy of learning from mistakes. It helped us win the smart race with weaker technology: we screwed up and invented the fire extinguisher, we screwed up the car, and we invented the seat belt. However, for the more powerful technology, such as nuclear weapons or the super smart AI, this is a terrible strategy – even a single mistake is unacceptable, we need to get things done for the first time. The risk of artificial intelligence is not Luddite intimidation – it is safety engineering. When the Apollo leaders thought carefully about anything that could go wrong on the moon, they were not alarmist. What they are doing ultimately leads to the success of the mission.
So, what we can do to preserve the benefits of artificial intelligence in the future is the four steps that AI researchers broadly support:
1. Investment in artificial intelligence safety research. How can we turn today’s suvs and exploitable computers into a powerful AI system that we truly believe in? Thanks for the last time your computer crashed, it’s not controlling your self-driving car or your grid. With the artificial intelligence system closer to the human level, can we let them learn, adopt and maintain our goals? Suppose you tell your future self drive to take you to the airport as soon as possible, to vomit, to be chased by a helicopter, and complain that this is not what you want. If your car answers, “but that’s what you’re asking for,” then you realize that machines need to fully understand how difficult and important our goals are. Through the national science foundation and other institutions, artificial intelligence security research is classified as the national key work. Equifax, which affects about half of americans, is just the latest reminder that all of our ai technology could be rejected unless we play our game.
2. The prohibition of the self-government of lethal weapons. We will begin artificial intelligence control weapons arms race out of control, and this can weaken the strong country, today for all people, including terrorist organizations, to provide cheap, convenient and anonymous the assassination of the machine. Let us use an international artificial intelligence arms control treaty to stigmatize this point, just as we have contempt and limit biological and chemical weapons, and maintain the benefits of biology and chemistry.
Make sure that the wealth created by AI makes everyone better off. The progress of the artificial intelligence (ai) may produce a luxury leisure society, or bring unprecedented hardship for the majority of unemployment, it depends on how artificial intelligence to generate wealth be taxed and sharing. Many economists believe that automation is eating into the middle class and making our country vulnerable. Ensuring that future technologies enable everyone to live a better life is not only moral, but also the key to maintaining healthy democracy.
Think about the future we want. When a student walks into my office looking for career advice, I ask myself where the future lies. If she want to answer, “maybe in the cancer ward or in prison,”, I will attack her plan strategy: I want to listen to her she was thrilled with a future, then we can discuss to reach the target of strategy, at the same time avoid the trap. However, humanity itself has made this mistake: from the terminator to the hunger games, our future vision is almost dystopian. We don’t need to be paralyzed by fear like paranoid depression, but we need to join a conversation about where the technology is going. If we don’t know what we want, we’re unlikely to get it.
